The Lincoln University Historic District
In 1985, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission determined that 15 buildings on Lincoln University's campus (pictured on this page and the home page) were eligible for recognition as the "Lincoln University Historic District" on the National Register of Historic Places. LUHI, a Pennsylvania non-profit organization founded by Lincoln University alumni, assisted the University in submitting a nomination for the national honor to preserve the buildings and develop a robust historic district to bring jobs and tourism to the campus community and geographic region, and preserve the important legacy of America's first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) for generations to come.
Dr. Brenda Allen included the historic buildings in the 2018 Campus Master Plan and selected Sasaki and Preservation Design Partnership to "Plan the Future of the Past—A Master Plan for a Historic Campus and Buildings." Work began redesigning the campus to acknowledge its historical significance, with the goal of elevating the institution's regional and national importance.
On June 13, 2022, the Lincoln University Historic District, consisting of buildings dating from mid-1800s through 1970, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places upon the successful nomination of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission.
